Real-World Applications in STEM Education

Connecting STEM Learning with the World Beyond the Classroom

How can authentic problems and meaningful applications make STEM education more relevant, motivating and impactful?

Real-world contexts allow learners to experience STEM knowledge as a tool for understanding and addressing questions that matter in society, everyday life as well as work life.  This track explores how authentic contexts, societal challenges and interdisciplinary perspectives can enrich STEM teaching and learning and foster deeper conceptual understanding, problem-solving and learner engagement.

We welcome theoretical, conceptual and empirical contributions from individual STEM disciplines as well as interdisciplinary perspectives.

Key Topics

  • Authentic contexts in STEM learning, including real-world problems and work life contexts, meaningful applications of STEM knowledge and authentic tasks.

  • Approaches to authentic STEM learning, including modelling, inquiry, problem-solving and interdisciplinary STEM learning.

  • Societal challenges as contexts for STEM education, including climate change, sustainability, socio-scientific issues and other global challenges.

  • Effects of real-world approaches on teaching and learning, including learner motivation, engagement, conceptual understanding and the transfer of STEM knowledge.
